About Recess Block
Recess Block helps neighborhood families do what used to happen at recess: meet, share and play. It's a free, invite-only app for parents and guardians, piloting in Westmore in Fairfax, Virginia.
Why we're building it
Families on the same street often don't know each other. Kids outgrow bikes and books that a neighbor's child would love, and parents look for playmates for their kids without knowing who lives nearby. Recess Block makes those connections easy, in a space limited to approved neighbors.
What we believe
- Community first. The app exists to get neighbors talking, lending and playing together.
- Trust first. Every member is invited and approved, and every report is reviewed within 24 hours.
- Kids' privacy, always. Accounts are for adults only. We never ask for children's names, birthdates, photos or schools.
- Sharing, not selling. Lending and giving are free. Nothing is bought or sold between members.
How we work, and how we'll pay for it
Recess Block is free for families and always will be. During the pilot it has no advertising and no income. As it grows, we may work with local libraries, schools, sports leagues and activity providers. When we do, these rules apply:
- We never sell or share your personal information.
- We never target ads at individual families, and nothing is ever aimed at children.
- Anything a partner pays for is clearly labeled, and you can hide it.
- Lending, giving, messaging and joining activities stay free, with no fees.
- No partner can influence moderation or safety decisions.
The pilot
We're starting with a small group of Westmore families, then opening more of the neighborhood and nearby ZIP codes one at a time. If you live in Westmore and would like to join, email support@therecessblock.com.
